Hatchet is about a young boy who gets stranded in the Canadian wilderness in Northern Alberta.

Gary Paulsen is a gifted writer, and Hatchet is his most famous novel. It is exciting, dramatic and filled with twists and turns right to the final page. Paulsen writes with amazing description and detail. His scenes almost jump from the page because of his expertise use of figurative language.

Last term, the class learned similes and metaphors as examples of figurative language. This term, we will be learning many more examples, including hyperbole, personification, onomatopoeia, alliteration and repetition. Once learned, the class will incorporate these writing tricks into their descriptive paragraphs that they will be writing throughout the term.

This week, we will be preparing in class for our 'starting a fire like Brian' class. Students will also need to pass a short fire safety test before they are allowed to participate. Appropriate clothing will also need to be brought and worn for this activity.

Our next story topic is extreme cold. Students will be given a story line that takes place in the Arctic. Our goal in this story is to write a few paragraphs that truly convey the feeling of being cold.

The class has gone over the four possible projects for the 1000 page reading challenge. Students will select only one and complete it according to their reading schedule and based on the project they select. All projects must be completed by the first week of June. The projects are:
